Looking for an Eco-friendly environment that is in a natural and remote rural setting, conserves the environment and is concerned about the welfare of the local community? PIKIDI Gardens Ecolodge is the place to go! PIKIDI is located in Uhoma Village near Liunda Beach, a center by the shores of Lake Victoria, in Central Sakwa, Siaya County, Kenya. It is 21km from Bondo Town.

The nature based experience starts with the name PIKIDI, a portmanteau of the words PI and KIDI derived from the local vernacular, Luo language. PI means water, which is a representation of the lake that almost surrounds us; KIDI means stone or rock, which represents the rocky terrain along the waterfront and ‘gardens’ represents the greenery that envelopes the ecolodge. Our micro-environment is basically about water, rocks and the greenery and this is the foundation of what we do at PIKIDI.

Why Pikidi Gardens Ecolodge

Take advantage of our direct access to the lake and enjoy various water activities and sports. We have boat rides that will allow you and your loved ones to cruise in the lake and visit nearby fishing islands. We are a fishing community and a boat ride to one of these fishing islands will expose you to interesting stuff you did not know about fish and fishing. The clear water allows you to comfortably swim in a secured section of the lake. Carry your fishing rods and have the satisfaction of catching your own fish.  We will show you how to prepare and cook it.

The sun hits hard in this part of the world but at PIKIDi, the microclimate drastically changes due to the cool breeze from the lake and the extensive shade under a forest of trees. Welcome to PIKIDI botanical gardens! Adorning our gardens is a wide range of mature indigenous trees as well as young medicinal and exotic ones that we keep planting. Our gardens have shrubs and herbs known to repel insects and certain reptiles, making PIKIDI ironically a ‘mosquito free area’.  We make a conscious effort to conserve trees and additionally, we are constantly planting more. Watch this space for a list of all the Flora in Pikidi.

Relax at the spectacular waterfront lounges or take a walk along the nature trail that snakes through the botanical gardens as you take in the breath-taking vibrant scenery, watch fishermen pass by, climb rocks, hear the chipping birds, watch them dive into the lake to catch fish and if you are lucky, see otters, monitor lizards and hippos swim by. This unspoilt natural environment offers guests an opportunity to truly connect with the surrounding wilderness. PIKIDI is home to over 160 bird species, a sure paradise for birders and ornithologists. List of all the Pikidi birds coming soon.

We often hide from the scorching sun but harness it as much as we can. PIKIDI is 100% on solar energy and is in the process of exploring wind energy to compliment solar. We use solar energy for indoor lighting, security, street lighting, power, water pumping and water heating for bathrooms and kitchens. Moonlight, starlight, candlelight, safari lamps as well as bonfires often become our source of light in the evenings when we serve dinner outdoors. How romantic!

We do not miss being eco-friendly even when it comes to construction of the accommodation facilities at PIKIDI, which are all set by a cliff with breath-taking views of the dynamic lake. We use natural and locally available materials as much as is possible. The first thing you notice when you get to PIKIDI is the beautiful rubble stone extensively used on the buildings and external spaces. The naturally well lit and ventilated interiors are adorned with furniture made out of reeds sourced from the local beaches; and lots of timber and stone surfaces.  To crown it all, the interior décor is predominantly composed of traditional artifacts and images for cooking, food storage, fishing, music, attire, furniture and farming; making PIKIDI a museum in the making.

We grow our own organic vegetables, have planted over fifteen types of fruits, rear free-range traditional chicken on our farm and source fresh fish from fishermen passing by. Fresh, simple and traditional meals are what we proudly serve our guests. Our traditional delicacies include brewed porridge with sweet potatoes, arrowroots or cassava for breakfast to fish or chicken served with traditional vegetables and a wide choice of accompaniments for lunch and dinner.  Our environment demands that meals are served outdoors unless the weather does not allow. Enjoy your breakfast at the gazebo or waterfront lounges, venture to ‘the tip’ of the gardens or the pebble beach for a bush lunch and experience a romantic dinner at the sunset terrace as you watch the sun setting and the phenomenon ‘omena city’ come to life or at one of the bonfires under a moonlit or starry sky.

To keep our environment free of pollution from waste, we strive to find environmentally friendly ways of recycling or disposing waste. We have a sewage treatment plant that takes care of waste from washrooms. The treated water from this plant is used for landscaping during the dry season but seeps into the underground rocks during the rains. We have an incinerator for certain waste that is not bio gradable while the organic waste from the kitchen is composted for farm use. Plastic bottles are used at our tree nursery while their tops are collected and used for artwork.

Last but not least is the local community, the people who make PIKIDI what it is. Without the community where would we have got this beautiful land to develop PIKIDI? Without them, who would have sold us stones for building? Who would we have hired to help build all the structures that are up? Who would have fed the builders? Without them who would be working at PIKIDI right now, securing and cleaning the property, working on the farm and tending the poultry, welcoming and attending to guests, manning the kitchen and preparing the delicious meals? We value the local community and consider them part of the PIKIDI family. As we grow, we have plans to grow with them through first, raising living standards of those we have employed then moving out to initiate activities that will positively impact the rest of the community.
